About the Portal

International safeguards stand at the center of the nuclear nonproliferation regime, monitoring nuclear activities and verifying their peaceful use. As safeguards burdens continue to grow and resources diminish, it is increasingly vital that the next generation works to bolster the effectiveness and efficiency of the system. This site aims to revitalize and expand the international safeguards human capital base by connecting young professionals, researchers, educators and industry from around the globe and providing them access to information which will help advance the field.

The Nonproliferation Portal creates a center for professional development and increases public awareness and understanding of the role of international safeguards in the effort to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons. By helping to educate all users on the technical and political aspects of international safeguards and nuclear nonproliferation, the program will foster understanding of these fields academically and expand a knowledge base that is crucial to combating nuclear proliferation.

This site is funded by the Office of International Nuclear Safeguards (OINS) within the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA). The NNSA undertook a comprehensive initiative to revitalize the international safeguards technology and human resource base, and OINS was designed to develop the policies, concepts, technologies, expertise, and infrastructure necessary to sustain the system. Standing on these five pillars, OINS is meeting the key challenges of the international safeguards system together with its international partners.
